Heart Attack Grill mourns the loss of Blair River

Published: March 04, 2020

There’s an old saying that is ringing truer these days than ever before – you are what you eat.

With the news today of the death of Blair River, the 29-year-old man who served as the face of the anti-health food establishment Heart Attack Grill comes the cold hard fact that if you eat unhealthily, you die unhealthily.

The cause of death is still unclear but speculation is that pneumonia developed after River was struggling with flu and his immune system was unable to cope with the disease.

He was a natural born heavyweight standing at 6’8″ and weighing in at 572 lbs at the time of his death, but eating the kind of meals he did at the Heart Attack Grill there’s little wonder he died so young. The average meal at the diner is somewhere around 8,000 calories; to put that into perspective their one meal is the equivalent in calories to five days worth of the recommended calorific intake of an average sized woman, and four days for the average man.

The diner prides itself on the unhealthy nature of its business but they do issue a warning on the menus and billboards explaining that you eat there knowing the potential risks, and you do so by choice. To emphasise the gimmick the staff are dressed like doctors and nurses.

Blair River gained some notoriety last fall when he signed on as the face and spokesperson for the diner and said at the time he had no regrets about the way he conducted his life and that he felt quite healthy.

The diner’s owner, Jon Basso gave a brief but emotional tribute to his friend, saying: “We all have a very, very brief time on this earth, and the measure of a man is how he leaves the world after he’s been here, and I can tell you Blair River was my friend.”

And while he is sad for the death of his friend Basso says he expects some criticism for his approach to food, even though the message at the foot of the menu says, “Warning; this establishment is bad for your health.”

“We are absolutely guilty for glorifying obesity, it’s what we do, but if you stop and think about why we glorify obesity and come into the Heart Attack Grill diet center I think you’ll get it,” said a defiantly marketing-minded  Basso.
