Whip My Hair starlet Willow Smith insists she is still a ‘normal girl’

Published: December 13, 2020

Is this one little starlet who is going too far too soon? Willow, daughter of movie stars Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, is just 10 years old and already she is a hit on the international music scene.

Willow stormed the charts with her first single Whip My Hair with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label when she was just 9 and she has already become the talk of fashion town, turning heads with her avante garde fashion.

The new singing sensation, who admitted recently she wants to be “famous like mommy and daddy”, told Britain’s NME magazine: “I would like to be a very well-known artist. I would like to be as big as Lady Gaga. I would like to be bigger. I’d like to be a big rock star.”

Willow has said she understands the mechanics of stardom and that she “gets how celebrity works”.

“It’s what I’ve wanted to do my whole life. I get my flow from Daddy, my singing ability from Mommy, and the camera stuff from both,” she explained with terrifying confidence.

In response to people expressing concern that the young singer is going to be a Hollywood child star case of “too much, too soon”, Jay-Z told Ryan Seacrest in a radio interview: ”

“She has a child’s innocence but she has a clear vision of who she is and who she wants to be.

“I can only imagine that’s how Mike [Michael Jackson] was as a young kid, he knew exactly what he wanted.

“When you have that sort of talent, there is no such thing as too young,” the hip-hop mogul argued.

Psychologist Corinne Sweet is not so convinced: “Becoming a star when you are a child can be too much too soon. You exist in a strange bubble where people make you think you are somebody very special. When child stars grow up they can have a problem with the reality of the world. They also have no goals to aim for as they did it all when they were young.”

Willow, who will be Justin Bieber’s opening act on his UK tour next year, insists she is still just a normal girl: “I like playing with my friends and just being a kid. We go on the swings, play video games, read,” She told MSN. “I record at 12 o’clock, I do school then I come home and sleep.”

Do you think Willow will be able to avoid the drug-fuelled path all the Britneys and Lohans ended up taking when she hits post-puberty?
