Scientists can predict when menopause will happen

A study claims it has found a way to predict at what age a woman will begin menopause. The test, conducted by scientists, reportedly measures the amount of hormone AMH – responsible for the development of follicles in the ovaries.
Scientists in Iran tested 266 women between the ages of 20 and 49 over the course of 12 years, the BBC reports.
Ramezani Tehrani of the Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Tehran, who led the study , told Reuters: “The results … could enable us to make a more realistic assessment of women’s reproductive status many years before they reach menopause,” said.
Researchers were also able to create a statiscal model with which they claim they can calculate the age at which a woman will enter menopause from just one blood sample.
The findings of this research are significant as it gives women a clear time frame during which they can plan their career and creating a family.
“A woman may cease monthly ovulation and experience menopause at 50, but she will probably have been effectively infertile for several years prior to this,” Tehrani said. “It will be important to let patients know that fertility will have declined greatly in the years preceding the final ovulation.”
Celebrities who have gone through menopause include Whoopi Goldberg, Susan Sarandon, Stevie Nicks, Rosie O-Donnell and Jane Seymour.

This has been the holy grail of women reproductive health. Now it seems women would know more about their future than man can ever know. Two things which changed the life a woman: modern contraceptives specially pills and now the prediction power for how long to take the pill. But more interesting than that, is where these two techniques were developed. One was invented in United States while the other was invented Iran. Two nations poles apart. I guess there is still some hope left in this world, for better. I wonder if instead of colonialism and wars we could have cooperated more with each other so that we could have even better things. After all we only have one planet to live on.
