New gel to replace teeth filling, say researchers

According to www.dailymail.co.uk, a new gel developed by the French scientists can put an end to drilling and scrapping of your teeth to get it filled. The people who wish to get their teeth filled up will not have to go through pain. The researchers from the National Institute for Health and Medical Research in Paris are of the view that the new gel will be particularly helpful in growing back the decaying teeth. The gel does this by making the cells to multiply and thus grow back the teeth. The experiments were done to see if the MSH hormone can instill tooth growth. To see this, it was mixed with Poly-L-glutamic acid and formed into a gel. The gel was then rubbed in cells taken from human teeth to see the results.

The gel was also rubbed on the teeth of mice, which had dental cavities. According to www.upi.com, the scientists found out that in a span of less than one month, the teeth were restored to their original state with the application of the gel.  Professor Damien Walmsley from the British Dental Association said that “It looks promising, but we will have to wait for the results to come back from clinical trials and its use will be restricted to treating small areas of dental decay.” More tests are to be done on the gel but in the next three to five years, the gel may be available to the people for use.
