Researchers say ecstasy is helpful for trauma patients
Published: July 19, 2010
According to a new health report published by www.bbc.co.uk, ecstasy can help trauma patients by helping in accelerating the success rate of their therapies. This fact has come up as the result of a study conducted by a team of US researchers on 20 patients. This research showed that using ecstasy by the trauma patients is not harmful and helps in improving the effectiveness of the treatments like psychotherapy. It is being believed that more research will be needed in order to be able to confirm the finding. The drug works by reducing the level of fear in the patients and this in turn helps get them the most from their therapy sessions.
According to www.ukwirednews.com, the research findings have been published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology. Patients suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, which tried all therapies and have been unsuccessful were the only ones selected to be the subjects for the study. The subjects had to undergo two psychotherapy tests, eight hours each, scheduled at the gap of a few weeks. Out of all the subjects, 12 were given doses of ecstasy and the rest were given placebo. After two months, out of all the subjects who were given ecstasy, 10 responded well to the psychotherapy. No side effects were noticed. However Professor Simon Wessely said that “Given that substance abuse is associated with many mental health problems including PTSD, I would want to see a lot more data before recommending this”
