Doritos inventor dies

Arch West, the inventor of Doritos (the tasty snack) has passed away at the age of 97. According to information acquired by TMZ, the legend will be buried with three different flavours of his prized invention.

Nacho average ceremony indeed!! (Unfortunately I can’t take the credit for that amazing pun, it was courtesy of TMZ). His daughter said the family plans on “tossing Doritos chips in before they put the dirt over the urn” when he is buried.

I don’t want to rewrite the following sentence, as it made me chuckle: “TMZ spoke with West’s son-in-law … who tells us the family will use Original, Cool Ranch and Nacho flavored Doritos, since those were West’s favorite. He was NOT a fan of the Cheeseburger flavor, so those will not be used.”

Doritos are a staple in the diets of stoners, layabouts and over-eaters the world over

Apparently Arch West was inspired to create one of the world’s tastiest snacks after a family holiday to San Diego, where he found a stall selling fried tortilla chips.

I have never really given much thought to the inventor of Doritos before, but now that I do, I feel truly grateful to good old Arch, rest his soul. My student days would not have been the same without a bag of the chili flavoured delights (sometimes accompanied by one of those delicious dips) in my room (or in someone else’s room - the point is they were always there, like a good old friend). Whether you’re stoned, depressed, bored or genuinely hungry, Doritos are the answer.

I’m not sure about American flavours, but in the UK, I seem to remember the “Cheese” variety being one of the less popular ones. I actually quite like it, but my favourite is definitely Chili and I find the Original a bit bland.

Anyway, time for a little trivia: ”Doritos” were released in the United States in 1964, the first tortilla chip to be launched nationally. The word “dorito” sounds similar to “doradito,” which means “little golden” in Spanish.

And we’re not the only ones to have fallen prey to the snack’s marketing campaigns. For all we know, there may be extra-terrestrial beings who are licking their lips and craving Doritos. In 2008 the chips were promoted by an “out-of-this-world” advertising campaign, literally beaming a 30 second advertisement for Doritos brand tortilla chips into a planetary system 42 light years away. The project was in collaboration with EISCAT Space Center in Svalbard, Norway. The “You Make It, We’ll Play It” contest chose the winning advertisement that was transmitted on June 12, 2008. The ad was beamed towards a distant star within the Ursa Major constellation that is orbited by planets which may harbor life

Watch this space. Earth may soon be invaded by aliens on a desperate quest for Doritos, Nacho Cheese flavour.
