Melanie Griffith has skin cancer removed

The ‘Working Girl’ actress reportedly had a skin cancer growth surgically removed from her face in recent days. The star was spotted sporting a bruise next to her right eye, and while some tabloids have claimed it might have been the result of a fight with husband Antonio Banderas, it has now been confirmed it was from the operation.

According to Cnn.com, the cancer was found and removed early enough to avoid any further or future complications.

The 52-year-old actress has had a tough year. After sustaining a knee injury, Melanie entered rehab to fight dependency on painkillers, fearing a dependency on prescription medication could perhaps allow her to fall back and take harder drugs, as she previously had.

According to contactmusic.com, Antonio Banderas said: “In March, she came to me and said, ‘I’m feeling a little bit weak in my determination for this (to stay sober)… so I just thought to go to rehabilitation by myself.’”

The actress successfully sought treatment in a rehab facility in August. Melanie has a history of alcohol and drug abuse. After her divorce from her second husband, with whom she has a son born in 1985, Melanie consumed large amounts of liquor and cocaine. Of the time, she said: “What I did was drink myself to sleep every night. If I wasn’t with someone, I was an unhappy girl.”

After reconciling with her first husband, Don Johnson, he insisted she enter rehab in the late 1980s. She then left him because she had substance abuse problems. After marrying Antonio Banderas in 1996, she entered rehab in 2000 for addiction to painkillers.

Other celebrities who have had skin cancer include Bob Marley and Elizabeth Taylor.
