Mike Starr of Alice In Chains found dead

Mike Starr, bass player with the grunge band Alice In Chains has been found dead at a house in Salt Lake City, Utah. The 44 year old was arrested last month and caught in possession of Xanax and Opana pills for which he was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance.

Starr appeared on the 3^rd season of Celebrity Rehab in 2009 and his battle with substance abuse, along with other members of the band is well documented.

Layne Staley, the band’s original front man died in April 2002. His body was discovered on April 19^th but coroners indicate that he had died on the 5^th (the same date as Kurt Cobain’s death in 1994). The report said he’d died as the result of a lethal injection of heroin and cocaine known as a ‘speedball’.

Prior to his death Staley said: “I’m not using drugs to get high like many people think. I know I made a big mistake when I started using this shit. It’s a very difficult thing to explain. My liver is not functioning, and I’m throwing up all the time and shitting my pants. The pain is more than you can handle. It’s the worst pain in the world. Dope sick hurts the entire body.”

The Salt Lake City police department told press that officers responded to a call regarding a body at a residence in the city centre area Tuesday afternoon. A spokesperson said: ‘There is nothing to indicate that this was foul play by another individual.’

Starr was kicked from Alice In Chains after his drug problems began to worsen but former band mates Jerry Cantrell and Sean Kinney released a statement which read: ‘Jerry and Sean are mourning the loss of their friend and ask that the media respect their privacy - and the privacy of Mike’s family - during this difficult time. Their thoughts & prayers are with Mike’s family.’

Michael Christopher ‘Mike’ Starr was born April 4^th 1966 and was the original bassist in Alice in Chains, joining at their inception in 1987 until 1993 when the band split after Staley’s death.

No official cause of death has been released as yet pending a coroner’s report.
