Recovered bulimic Geri Halliwell pleads for sufferers to seek help

Published: January 11, 2021

Former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell suffered from binge eating and bulimia since her childhood. Geri admitted in the past that she has always been insecure about her looks and body shape and this consciousness about her weight and body issues forced her to survive on binge eating.

Talking about her bulimic past in fabulousmag.co.uk, Halliwell said: “In the past, I always had my hang-ups, believing I wasn’t pretty enough, or a good enough singer, or thin enough.”

Geri says being in the spotlight and in front of cameras and in the public eye at all times took it’s toll on her. “There’s always going to be that pressure when you’re in front of the camera. When you’re famous it’s just an extreme version of reality and there’s a pressure to look a certain way”.

Geri seriously succumbed to this pressure for her comeback after she left the most successful girl band in history, the Spice Girls, in 1998. Embarking on a solo career the next year, she wanted to make sure she was in perfect shape and had the best body to go along with her new image. In her video to “It’s Raining Men”, a relatively thin Geri sports a very toned physique. However, as the weeks and months went by, and she lost some weight, it became clear that she might be suffering from an eating disorder.

After being targeted repeatedly for her thin looks, Geri Halliwell still feels that being thin or heavy is a matter of personal choice and was once quoted as saying: “Some people are naturally thin and some people are naturally heavier. It doesn’t mean that bigger is healthier, or much thinner is healthier, it’s on an individual basis. Someone taught me how to eat properly. Learning from others is important when it’s not working for yourself.”

After years of being on a strict diet, Geri seems to have overcome her body issues and says she is enjoying food and eating normally.

This fantastic English recording artist now says: “I have a history of eating disorders but, as a mother, you think of being an example to your child. I’m so much more balanced than I was.”

Geri further says, “I can honestly tell you from personal experience, that worrying about an eating disorder really can get you down. There’s nothing to be ashamed about. You’ll be amazed at the difference it’ll make to your whole life if you tell someone you trust. There are lots of people who want to help and you really CAN’T fight this one on your own. It might be a hard decision to make, to tell people and to seek help but, trust me it’s nowhere as hard as trying to deal with it on your own.”

Other celebrities who have suffered from eating disorders include Mary-Kate Olsen, Sharon Osbourne, Daniel Johns and Jane Fonda.
