Swedish actor Per Oscarsson feared dead after house fire

Published: January 03, 2021

According to news reports this morning a house fire appears to have killed actor Per Oscarsson and his wife. Although not so well known outside Europe, Oscarsson is considered a colossus of Swedish cinema and in 1966 he won the best actor award at Cannes Film Festival. He has also appeared in the film realisation of The Girl Who Played With Fire, from Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy.

Police spokesperson, Jan Strommegard told the press that the remains of one person were found in the ashes of his house on Sunday night, and are thought to be either those of 83 year old Oscarsson or his 67-year-old wife, Kia Ostling.

Family reported both Oscarsson and Ostling missing but believe that they were both at home when the fire destroyed their house early on Friday.

The house was built in a remote area outside the small town of Skara in southwest Sweden, and by the time fire fighters arrived on the scene all that remained standing was the chimney, the rest was literally ashes.

Strommegard was unable to determine when the identification process would be completed but he did insist that police were still looking for the remains of the second body.

As yet the cause of the blaze was unknown, but it was fierce enough to decimate the entire house in a short time.

As previously mentioned, Oscarsson won the best actor award at the 1966 Cannes Film Festival for his portrayal of the starving writer Pontus in the movie Hunger. His career saw him star in over 100 Swedish films and television shows.

His most recent role put him in the shoes of Holger Palmgren, the legal guardian of the protagonist Lisbeth Salander, in the Swedish film, The Girl Who Played With Fire, based on Stieg Larsson’s best selling book.

US critic, Roger Ebert, in his review of The Girl Who Played With Fire, singled out the performance of Oscarsson, heralding him as “a great Swedish actor … who incredibly never worked with Bergman.”

Please share your thoughts on the career and life of Per Oscarsson by leaving a comment.

Other film and TV stars who suffered accidental deaths include Heath Ledger, River Phoenix, Gary Coleman and Adam Goldstein.
