The world tunes in to Twitter to see Charlie Sheen’s tidal wave come crashing in

Some time ago, maybe six or seven months at most; from a virtual beach anywhere in the world you could see the faintest traces of a growing wave. The shore line would recede a little further as the growing swell took form and began to hurtle towards the land; towards us.

Some call it ‘Il Nino’, a calamitous weather event caused by ocean thermal convections which causes mass flooding and devastation without exception.

To create such a gargantuan squall the ocean pulls everything around it into itself; the crashing waves are the regurgitations of its unwanted consumption that crush and smother everything they approach.

And so this is what the media has become where Charlie Sheen is concerned.

With 750’000 followers in his first hour of joining Twitter, one might be forgiven for thinking that Sheen is still a popular figure, but I imagine it is more curiosity on the part of the viewer; tuning in to watch what the clown will do next.

One thing is strikingly clear though, everything he has done since Christmas is aimed at securing as much publicity as possible. He is painfully desperate to remain in the public’s eye but for what purpose is still unclear.

Are we about to see the emergence of the new messiah? His words of late would certainly allude to that notion and he is clearly displaying delusional behaviour as was perfectly highlighted when he spoke about his most recent use of drugs: “I’m proud of what I created. It was radical. I exposed people to magic. I exposed them to something they’re never going to see in their boring normal lives.”

He’s a presumptuous one for sure and the truth is that he’s looking at it all the wrong way round. Living with two women, consuming drugs and booze in copious amounts and spouting streams of consciousness publicly is hardly magic. Sheen’s efforts seem more like the last desperate throws of a rapidly falling star trying to ignite some life into its doomed existence.

And we’re all partly responsible. All the while we keep watching and commenting he’ll keep performing. If the world was a school then Sheen would without doubt be the class clown; laughed at, entertained by, but ultimately a lonely soul in need of direction and positive attention.

He’s going the wrong way.
