The Ministry of Health (MoH), in cooperation with the Health Authority-Abu Dhabi (HAAD) and the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), has launched a new multidisciplinary educational training scheme called “Practical Diabetes Programme”.

The initiative will benefit diabetes care physicians and educators as part of the national diabetes higher committee to fight the disease.

Dr Mahmoud Fikri, Assistant Undersecretary for Health Policies at the Ministry of Health and Chairman of the Diabetes Higher National Committee, stated that the new programme is an extension to the previous training programmes, which were organised by the ministry to raise the efficiency of the diabetes practitioners and update their knowledge and skills. The training programme has been put together by a group of leading endocrinologists from the Ministry of Health, HAAD, Shaikh Khalifa Medical City and DHA.

Dr Fikri elaborated that the previous training programmes used to emphasise and highlight the latest researchers and studies which were carried out by international research and training centres in the field of diabetes. The new programme aims to provide primary healthcare professionals with a basic understanding of diabetes in relation to diagnosis, prevention and management of diabetes and complications connected with the disease.

He said: “The multidisciplinary education programme consists of five individual Continued Medical Education (CME) accredited courses tailored to the educational needs of general practitioners, diabetes nurses and dieticians, endocrinologists and internists. Healthcare professionals working in hospital setting and those working with diabetes in special circumstances will find these courses useful. The first phase of the programme will begin on May 11 in Dubai whereas an outline of the entire programme can be found on www.practicaldiabetes.ae.”

All the training programmes are free of charge while doctors, nurses and dieticians can register in the programme on the same website. — news@khaleejtimes.com
