MUMBAI: BJP president Nitin Gadkari underwent bariatric surgery at Saifee Hospital, near Charni Road, on Monday, said informed sources. Bariatric surgery is better known as weight-loss surgery and is usually recommended for severely obese people who have related problems such as diabetes, hypertension or sleep apnea.

The sources said Gadkari was operated on by surgeon Muffazal Lakdawala and is doing well. Dr Lakdawala refused comment on his VVIP patient.

Sources close to the BJP chief, too, refused to talk about the surgery. A highly-placed BJP official told TOI on Tuesday, “He was admitted to Saifee Hospital for a routine diabetes check-up. There was no surgery.” He added that Gadkari would be out of the hospital on Wednesday.

Probably taking a cue from the Congress, which did not divulge details of Sonia Gandhi’s recent medical treatment in the US, the Mumbai BJP was tight-lipped. “I have no idea about Gadkariji being admitted to a hospital. I am out of Mumbai,” said MLC Vinod Tawde. Senior party functionary Atul Bhatkhalkar, too, declined comment.

MNS chief Raj Thackeray reportedly called on Gadkari. Raj has an excellent equation with the BJP president.

Obesity has troubled the Maharashtra BJP in recent years with three party legislators-Vinod Tawde, Mangal Prabhat Lodha and Devendra Fadnavis - reportedly seeking medical help to shed additional kilos.

Bariatric surgery is recommended only for the severely obese who have one or more health problems related with their weight such as diabetes, sleep apnea or varicose veins. Long-term research has shown that the procedure not only results in drastic weight loss, but also helps treat diabetes, hypertension, etc. There are several methods of performing bariatric surgery, with one of the most popular ones being reducing the size of the stomach so that the person feels full on eating lesser quantity of food.

Football legend Diego Maradona underwent this surgery a few years ago.
