Christian Bale lets rip at film critic over ‘trademark weight loss’ comment

Christian Bale is no stranger to undergoing dramatic physical changes and his transformation for his latest role in the Golden Globe-nominated movie The Fighter was no different, with the actor losing one third of his entire body weight to embody real-life former boxer and manic drug addict Dicky Eklund.
For many actors, gaining and losing significant amounts of weight is part of the job, but few would be prepared to adopt the extreme measures of Bale, who previously lost a staggering 63 pounds for his role as an emaciated insomniac in The Machinist.
When a critic had the audacity to write about Bale’s “trademark weight loss”, the hot-tempered actor lashed back: ”To be honest, I find it laughable that it’s considered to be some f****** gimmick - it’s so patronizing,” Bale told Australia’s Empire Magazine.
“For God’s sake, do people not understand what a pain it is to do?
“It’s as though it’s some comment about, ‘Oh it’s easy for him, because he’s done it a bunch of times’.
“It’s not easy, it’s not fun - it’s horrible.
“I would never pick to do that, but it’s a part that I like and he’s a welterweight and he’s a crackhead.
“I don’t know about you, but I’ve never seen a welterweight with any fat on him - or a crackhead.
“So it’s just what you end up having to do.
“I’d just like to p*** on that guy’s shoes.”
On how he choses the parts he plays, Bale recently told MTV:”I have no goal of seeing if I can become invisible one day, eat so little that I disappear.
“I didn’t take this job because I went, ‘Oh, there’s a physical transformation needed.’ I always go, ‘Damn! There’s a physical transformation needed.
“Again, I just didn’t recognize that. I just like the character and then realized, ‘Oh, crap, he’s a welterweight.’”
