Rihanna’s restraining order against Chris Brown is revoked

Published: February 23, 2021

A judge has ruled that R&B singer Chris Brown no longer has to keep his distance from Rihanna after downgrading the restraining order placed on him as part of his felony assault case.

Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg made the ruling after Rihanna’s attorney told the court her client had no objection to removing the stay-away section of an order placed against Brown after he pleaded guilty to charges of assault against her on February 2009.

The original order meant that Brown had to keep a distance of 45 meters unless at a music awards event where it was reduced to 9 metres. One assumes Brown had to carry a tape measure with him just in case he should run into her.

That's less than 9 metres.

The judge wouldn’t have relaxed the order unless Rihanna was happy for her to, and upon Brown’s completion of domestic violence counselling. No objections to the change have been presented.

Schnegg was quick to praise the progress of Brown who attended the court on Tuesday. She stated that he is making excellent headway towards completing the physical labour requirements of his probationary period and consequently will not have to attend the next hearing scheduled for June 22nd.

The revised order remains in place until Brown’s probation period ends in August 2014.

The new order means that he and Rihanna can now speak to each other again, but if Brown is found to have threatened, harassed, assaulted or tried to follow her movements, he would be held in violation of his probation.

23 year olf Rihanna, real name Robyn Fenty, is legally allowed to record any threatening conversations with Brown and use them as evidence against him should she need to contact authorities.

21 year old Brown was indicted with felony assault after he reportedly beat Rihanna in a rental car during an argument after they left a pre-Grammy Award party back in February 2009.

Since the incident both have enjoyed an upturn in their careers as they were nominated for Grammys again. Rihanna played at the event but Brown did not attend.
