Shalane Flanagan takes second in the 2010 ING New York Marathon

Shalane Flanagan has managed an excellent second place on her marathon debut today in the 2010 ING New York Marathon. The former Marblehead High School student completed the run with a very respectable time of 2:28:40.
During her time at Marblehead, Massachusetts, Flanagan competed in the All-State cross country run three times, earning herself a first-place All-State finish in the mile. In the 2008 Beijing Olympics she won the bronze medal in the 10,000 m.
Shalane Flanagan was a relatively unknown figure prior to the Beijing Olympics but the 29 year old (then 27) caught the nation’s eye in an internationally televized record-breaking run on August 15th, 2008, which saw her break her own, and the American 10,000 meter record at the world famous Bird’s Nest Track.
That earned her a bronze medal and the accolade of being only the second American woman to win a medal for that distance in the Olympics.
Her professional career had a stuttering start during 2005 and 2006 especially. Her whole 2006 season was written off after surgery to remove an additional bone in her foot, but 2007 saw the runner make an extraordinary comeback.
Clearly driven by the desire to put her injury behind her she absolutely destroyed the American 3,000m, shaving an incredible 6 seconds off the previous best. Not satisfied with that she also broke the 5,000 meter record too.
With a finishing time of 2:28.40 and a second place in her marathon debut she has once again set her stall out for success. Perhaps next year we’ll see Shalane Flanagan finish with a faster time and a first place medal.
