Gadkari undergoes surgery for balloon belly

A self-proclaimed foodie who weighs over 110kg, Nitin Gadkari has gone under the knife to tackle his ballooning weight.

The BJP chief underwent gastric bypass surgery on Monday at South Mumbai’s Saifee hospital, where he was operated upon by Dr Muffazal Lakdawala.

While the party officials tried to claim earlier that Gadkari had been admitted for a “routine diabetes check-up”, sources in the hospital confirmed he had undergone a bariatric surgery.

The Saifee authorities, in fact, issued a press release stating that Gadkari, who suffers from diabetic nephropathy which affects the kidneys, had to be operated upon to control his sugar level.

He has Type-2 diabetes - associated with those suffering from obesity - which can cause heart disease, blindness and nerve and kidney damage.

The gastric bypass surgery will help the BJP chief become leaner by bringing his weight within 90 kg. The procedure is simple, reduces the size of the stomach and shortens the intestine. Once the stomach is smaller, the person feels full even after eating a small meal. This helps in losing weight.

The surgery also helps treat diabetes as the intestines increase the production of hormones that stimulate the pancreas to make more insulin.

Gadkari will be discharged within a day or two and, sources claimed, he would be able to resume work after two weeks.

A number of politicians in Maharashtra have undergone bariatric surgery. In fact, many of them are from the BJP. Senior MLA Mangal Prabhat Lodha took the procedure while Gadkari’s close aide Vinod Tawde and BJP MLA Devendra Phadnavis also underwent the surgery a few years ago.

Former Maharashtra MoS for home Nitin Raut and former NCP minister Nawab Malik went under the knife for the same reason. The surgery is not without its drawbacks, though.

Because of massive weight loss, a huge amount of skin sags. This, besides becoming an eyesore, causes depression. As a result, many patients who undergo bariatric surgery might have to later go for “body contouring”, in which the excess skin is cut off and the remaining is tightened.

Whether the BJP chief will also undergo this procedure remains to be seen.
