Breastfeeding cuts diabetes risk in kids’

Washington: Breastfeeding children promotes healthy growth and also reduces the risk of diabetes and overweight later in life, a new study has found.

According to the large-scale Danish study of small children, conducted by the Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Copenhagen, breastfeeding lowers the levels of the growth hormones IGF-I and insulin in the blood of children due to which their growth is slightly slower.

The PhD project, which is part of SKOT, followed and examined 330 healthy children at 9, 18 and 36 months.

“We can see that breastfeeding has a significant, measurable effect on the important growth regulators in the blood, IGF-I and insulin. The more times the child was breastfed, the lower the hormone levels. This suggests that the child has a slightly lower risk of becoming overweight later in childhood. At the same time, there was a correlation between how long the children were breastfed and their weight at 18 months,” Anja Lykke Madsen, LIFE PhD, said.

Kim Fleischer Michaelsen from LIFE, head of the SKOT project, said that the study provides valuable knowledge about the factors affecting the early onset of obesity.

“It is well-known that children who are breastfed grow slightly more slowly than children who are given formula, and it looks as if this growth pattern is optimal because it reduces the risk of developing lifestyle diseases later in life. However, the new results from SKOT show that breastfeeding also affects levels of IGF-I and insulin at 9 months, i.e. at a time when the children are well into eating solids,” Michaelsen said.

“Looking at the children’s growth up to 18 months identified a number of interesting correlations which may improve our understanding of the mechanisms behind early-onset obesity. The longer the children were breastfed, the lower their weight at 18 months. It’s as simple as that,” he added.

  2. Hello Celebritieswithdiseases,
Thanks for the info, I gave birth very last tuesday, twelve-26, and I am breastfeeding. For the earlier 4 days I have been obtaining night time sweats, sweats in the day, chills, headache when or twice a day, and then I come to feel okay. I dont have Mastitis as I have asked my doc this, she stated if there is no red streaks (there isnt) then it truly is not, but engorgement, which I am pondering could possibly be the circumstance. BC my breast get extremely very hot at moments (oh and milk has come in, nipples had been cracked, but healed, was getting trouble latching on, but simply because previous night time, bettter on each.) and I did not have Gestational Diabetes, but diabetes does run in my family unit. so a whole lot info but i extremely want to know if any of you pregnant moms who breastfeed have at any time gone thru this? is it hormones? i was anemic, but doc didnt have trouble w/ this bc it was at a reliable count well before i gave birth. is it that? i had a do-section, but reduce is therapeutic very good, there was a flare up on the ideal aspect, but i am placing ice on it and it feels more suitable. remember to let me know!
    Keep up the posts!

    Dear Celebritieswithdiseases,
Cool Post, I gave birth last tuesday, 12-26, and I’m breastfeeding. For the past 4 days I’ve been having night sweats, sweats in the day, chills, headache once or twice a day, and then I feel fine. I dont have Mastitis as I have asked my doc this, she said if there’s no red streaks (there isnt) then it’s not, but engorgement, which I’m thinking might be the case. BC my breast get really hot at times (oh and milk has come in, nipples were cracked, but healed, was having trouble latching on, but since last night, bettter on both.) and I did not have Gestational Diabetes, but diabetes does run in my family. so much info but i really want to know if any of you pregnant moms who breastfeed have ever gone through this? is it hormones? i was anemic, but doc didnt have problem w/ this bc it was at a good count before i gave birth. is it that? i had a c-section, but cut is healing fine, there was a flare up on the right side, but i’m putting ice on it and it feels better. please let me know!

    Hey There Celebritieswithdiseases,
I take your point, I gave birth final tuesday, 12-26, and I’m breastfeeding. For the previous four days I have been owning evening sweats, sweats in the day, chills, headache once or two times a day, and then I feel good. I dont have Mastitis as I have asked my document this, she said if there’s no red streaks (there isnt) then it truly is not, but engorgement, which I’m imagining may possibly be the scenario. BC my breast get extremely sizzling at occasions (oh and milk has occur in, nipples have been cracked, but healed, was acquiring difficulties latching on, but given that previous night, bettter on equally.) and I did not have Gestational Diabetes, but diabetes does run in my friends and family. so a whole lot information but i absolutely want to know if any of you pregnant moms who breastfeed have actually gone via this? is it hormones? i was anemic, but document didnt have obstacle w/ this bc it was at a great count in advance of i gave birth. is it that? i had a do-area, but cut is healing good, there was a flare up on the right facet, but i am placing ice on it and it feels more desirable. be sure to let me know!
