A new program will be geared toward promoting healthy habits in children.

In “Healthy Schuylkill Summer” those in pre-kindergarten to eighth grade will have the opportunity to keep a log and be eligible for a prize.

The theme is “Five a Day and an Hour of Play,” which refers to eating five fruits and vegetables a day, is to “Encourage them to exercise and eat well,” said Kay Jones, executive director of Schuylkill County VISION.

Along with VISION, the Schuylkill County Conservation District, the county visitors bureau and the libraries in the county will be participating, Jones said.

“When we had the results from last year, we knew we needed to be doing something,” she said of the county health rankings.

Last year, the county had an overall score of 56; it was 57 this year.

The program starts June 5 to Aug. 14. Children will get a water bottle and be able to complete their log at home.

Exact details have not been finalized, Jones said.

Activity coloring books will be distributed to children as part of the program, she said.

Jean Towle, district consultant for the Pottsville Free Public Library, also said details haven’t been completed but registration information can be obtained at the library.
