George Strait shines at the Country Music Awards

Last night the country music stars shone upon their fans at the Country Music Awards in Nashville. Perhaps the brightest light was George Strait, the King of Country.

The man, the legend has been wowing fans with hit upon hit since the 1970’s and at the CMA last night he did it again with his new song, The Breath You Take.  Taken from his latest album the song is as passionate as anything he has previously penned, and will undoubtedly be another huge success.

George Harvey Strait was born on May 18th, 1952 and aside from being an American country music singer, he is also an actor and a music producer. He won the title King of Country after a career which has spanned almost 4 decades and has seen him sell more than 68 million records worldwide.  To call Strait a living legend would almost be an understatement.

His unique style of western swing, bar-room ballads, honky-tonk, and traditional country western music has caused his audience to grow, crossing over genres and netting him a world record fifty seven number one singles.

To date Strait has sold more than 68.5 million albums in the USA and his hall of fame includes 13 multi-platinum, 33 platinum and 38 gold albums. His best-seller, Pure Country (1992) sold a staggering 6 million copies. With 2 million copies sold his box set, Strait Out of the Box (1995) won him 8 multi platinum awards. According to the RIAA’s standings, George Strait is the 12th best-selling recording artist in the United States.

His life has not been without tragedy though and while his accolades as a recording artist will remain in the history books of the future they can never replace the loss of his daughter Jenifer who was killed in a car accident in 1986 at the age of 13.  The family set up The Jenifer Lynn Strait Foundation, which donates money to children’s charities in her honour.
