Demi Lovato - the effects of bipolar disorder, anorexia, bulimia & self harming

Published: July 14, 2020

Child star Demi Lovato has reportedly said that the issues associated with her bipolar disorder are a ‘daily battle’ and are likely to be so for the rest of her life.

The former Sonny With a Chance star was admitted to rehab late last year and it was then released that she was suffering with bulimia and anorexia and had also been self harming and was a victim of bipolar disorder.

18-year old Lovato admitted in an interview that she struggles with body image issues.

“I wasn’t going to continue to be alive if I continued to treat my body the way was… It’s a daily journey and it’s definitely going to be a struggle that I’ll have to deal with for the rest of my life. Sometimes I think, ‘Why couldn’t I have been normal?’ It’s going to be a daily battle and I’m not going to be perfect, but as long as I wake up in the morning and I eat my breakfast and I say, ‘Look, ‘I’m going to eat this meal for right now. I’m going to eat for the rest of the day, I’m not going to self harm, and I’m not doing to do anything self-destructive.’ If I can make it through the day, that’s all that matters.”

Demi Lovato - No bipolar, no eating disorder, no self-harming

It’s no surprise that a young woman in Demi Lovato’s position should fall victim to these illnesses. Eating disorders are rife amongst young women who constantly strive to be ‘perfect’ like the celebrities they idolize. Actually being one of those celebrities – especially at such a young age – and knowing that you are expected to be a certain size and always dressed to perfection clearly magnifies the chances of developing these self-destructive disorders and must be an incredible strain on a young personality that is not yet experienced enough to deal with the huge demands of stardom.

Demi Lovato - the pressure on young women to look 'perfect' is immense

Eating disorders are killers and it’s about time the media stopped blinding us with Photoshopped images of impossibly perfect faces and bodies that we stand no chance of ever possibly emulating. Lives are at stake here.

I hope Demi Lovato gets better in time. Whilst eating disorders never really go away, they can and will decrease in severity. I’m living proof of that.

Other celebrities who have battled with eating disorders are Russell Brand, Jane Fonda, Britney Spears, Geri Halliwell, Felicity Huffman, Elton John, Princess Diana.
