Ataxophobia: the fear of disorder

Published: December 06, 2020

A phobia is a type of anxiety disorder with panic attacks as their most common symptoms. For many phobics, a small thing or situation can trigger a severe reaction. Phobias can be both rational and irrational. Interestingly, many celebrities suffer from different kinds of phobias, which make them unique in their own ways. Ataxophobia is one such irrational phobia, which means fear of chaos or disorder.

People suffering from ataxophobia cannot bear untidiness and want everything well organised. Some of the most common symptoms of ataxophobia include feeling of panic, feeling of terror, rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, anxiety, trembling and feeling of dread.

Ataxophobia sufferers tend to get panic attacks if they do see things that are not orderly or well arranged. This is definitely one of the stranger phobias and it may be classified under obsessive-compulsive disorder.

With a high-profile life, some stars have obsessions even more bizarre than the phobias of a common man and same is the case with British soccer star and style icon David Beckham. The man is a perfectionist both on the field and off.

According to his wife Victoria (as quoted on Foxnews.com), “If there are three cans of diet coke he’d throw one away rather than having three because it’s uneven.”

Talking bout his perfection, each shirt in David’s wardrobe is arranged according to its color. Beckham admitted that he is suffering from this obsessive compulsive disorder and, according to OK Magazine, said: “We used to have this rug that when you vacuumed it, you get lines like on the turf at Wembley. Victoria used to catch me when the kids had gone to bed doing the vacuuming and it would all be in perfect lines.”

He is known for his obsession of cleanliness and tidiness and he lines up the coke cans in fridge. The Insider once quoted David as saying:  “I’m very organised and controlled and need to go to bed at night knowing what I’m going to wear the next morning.”

Getting over ataxophobia is not a terribly difficult task in that an individual must change their perceptions by following specific steps.

Celebrities who are plagued by their phobias include Justin TimberlakeChristina RicciWoody Allen and Billy Bob Thornton.
