Etta James in hospital with blood infection

The blues singer, who is most famous for her hit song “At Last”, is in a hospital receiving treatment for a variety of ailments, her son, Donto James told Reuters. The star, who was battled many addictions in the past, was reportedly in a rehab facility detoxifying and receiving treatment for an addiction to painkillers when she fell ill.

The 72-year-old star has been in hospital for a week now, but is expected to be released from the California facility “very soon”, her son says. Etta was brought to hospital for a blood infection (sepsis), which, as the BBC reports, is thought to originate from a urinary tract infection she had earlier. She is reportedly also having speech difficulties, the cause of which has yet to be determined.

CNN.com reports Etta’s son is worried this could be a symptom for Alzheimer’s disease, but doctors are still not sure exactly what is wrong with her.

“I am going to end up losing my mother if it keeps going on like this,” he told CNN. “There has to be another doctor out there who can tell me what is going on with my mother.

“She’s been in a pretty big battle,” he added to Reuters.

But it certainly hasn’t been her only battle. Discovered in the mid-1950s, Etta began battling a heroin addiction in the 1960s, which would last over a decade. Her longtime addiction to the illegal drug also saw her repeatedly enter Los Angeles’ Tarzana Psychiatric Hospital over several years.

Etta is currently still singing and performing, and is enjoying being active in a career that has spanned over five decades. As soon as we know more about a diagnosis, we will report about it here.

Other celebrities who have battled Alzheimer’s include Ronald Reagan and Charlton Heston.
