Former plus-size model Crystal Renn addresses outcry about her weight loss

Published: February 08, 2021

She starved herself down to a size 0 as a teenager, then famously filled out to a size 16 and walked down the most sought-after catwalks as a plus-size model. She was — much to her disgust — photoshopped down to a size 2 when in fact she was a size 10. Now a size 8, she talks about the pressure she felt to keep the kilos piled on.

Renn was discovered by a model scout when she was 14 years old and a size 12. Shortly afterwards she started starving herself and developed anorexia and an addiction to exercise, working out obsessively up to eight hours a day. She was a ‘normal’ skinny, unknown model with jobs few and far between.

Fast forward a few years and 16 dress sizes and she had, thanks to her Rubanesque curves, become one of the world’s most famous models and a firm favorite with designers like Zac Posen and Jean Paul Gautier.

Last year, however, she decided to embrace a more healthy lifestyle and she started hiking and doing yoga. As her weight started to drop, criticism started flooding in. In a new blog video for modeling agency Ford, which represents the 24 year old, she addresses the outcry about her diminishing size and the pressure she felt to maintain her fuller figure, saying that she would have to develop another eating disorder to live up to people’s expectations of her as a plus-size model.

“I feel pressure probably more than any place from the public and the media. I think by placing a title on my head — which is plus-size — and then the picture that these people have created in their mind about what plus-size actually is, I basically fail you just with that, because I couldn’t possibly live up to that.

“At this point in my life I would have to have another eating disorder to live up to that expectation. I had anorexia ultimately because someone else set the standard for me and I wanted to follow it. And if I followed what the public wanted from me or what the media wants from me I would be doing the same thing — I would have a binge eating disorder.”

Renn, who today is the face of Jimmy Choo and still a hot favourite with Chanel, credits her weight loss to a healthy lifestyle and sensible exercise regime. In an interview with New York Magazine, she said: “I think I probably have a good relationship with the exercise that I do do. I’m taking care. I’m just in a really good place. I do hiking. I do yoga, but nothing crazy, just in my house. It brings me peace.”

But then isn’t that the allure and irony of fashion? That in the end nobody ever gets to live up to the ideals that the fashion world sets up for the consumers and society alike (unless of course eternal binge eating is your mantra). Who also can’t live up to the ideal are the models themselves who are used to portray these ideals.

Which raises the bigger question, when is the fashion industry eventually going to own up to the traps that it sets up for itself and the illusions that it absolutely believes against their better judgement are real?

Well its a pitty she wants to be thin sized now. What made her famous plus sizes and women in plus sizes shoudl be proud of her beautiful bodies. More and more people start to acknowledge that thin sized is a relci from the past. today women should wear what they like and have a wide range of possibilties to chose from. Nowadays you can find lots of nice online shops such as igigi, lane brayant or http://www.navabi.tv they fight for our rights as a cruvy women.
