Halle Berry and her diabetes

Published: October 19, 2020

She gave us a sexy Catwoman, she played a sultry Bond girl and seduced men the world over in a bikini, and she is the first African-American woman to ever win an Oscar for Best Actress. Halle Berry is a woman of extraordinary talent, an actress who managed to catapult herself into international fame and A-list celebrity status.

The 43-year-old actress has starred in movies like ‘X Men’, ‘Swordfish’ and ‘Monster’s Ball’ (for which she was awarded the Oscar), and is recognized for her talent all over the globe.

It’s strange to think that Berry’s career almost never took off. In 1989, while on the set of a movie, Berry reportedly began to feel weak. But before she had the chance to sit down, she fell into a diabetic coma that ended up lasting a week. After regaining her consciousness, she realized her life had forever changed.

“Diabetes caught me completely off guard,” she explains.

She was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, which is when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin to feed the cells all over the body with sugar, essentially not producing enough energy for the body to function.

Because diabetes can have severe effects, Berry knew a change in her life was essential. Diabetes can cause nerve, heart and kidney damage, among other things. Click to read more about complications to do with type 2 diabetes.

Berry said she was terrified when she was first diagnosed with diabetes. “They told me I might lose my eyesight, or I could lose my legs,” she remembers, with a shudder.

“I was scared to death, I thought I was going to die.”

One major change she made was changing her eating habits. “I started to eat loads of wonderful fresh vegetables, chicken, fresh fish and pasta. I cut out red meat and cut back on fruit because it can contain quite a lot of sugar.“

In addition to eating healthier, she exercises regularly and ensures her blood sugar levels are where they should be.

“I have to test my blood sugar levels at least a couple of times a day,” she says.

“I do a tiny pinprick, usually on my fingertips, and test it with a special kit which tell me how high or low my blood sugar levels are.

“Then using this as a guide I inject myself with the correct dose of insulin to level up my blood sugar.“

Today Halle Berry seems to be in complete control of her diabetes and leads a happy life. Together with a model, Berry is the happy parent of daughter Nahla Ariela, born in 2008.  Halle Berry became pregnant after through in vitro fertilization (IVF).
