Skin cancer soon to be an ‘epidemic’

Skin cancer might soon be declared an epidemic in the USA, a recent study says. According to www. abcnews.go.com, US researchers have found that despite constant warnings on the risk of sun exposure, the cases of non-melanoma skin cancer in the US are on the rise and may turn into an epidemic soon.
In this recent study to be published in the Archives of Dermatology, the researchers concluded that though Melanoma is an uncommon medical problem, however it can prove fatal since it spreads fast in the human body. The findings of this study show a rise of 16 percent in the patients of skin cancer from 2000 to 2006. Talking about the new model to calculate the cases of skin cancer, Dr. Robert Stern from Harvard Medical School said, “The model suggests that the prevalence of a history of skin cancer is about five times higher than either breast or prostate cancer and greater than the 31-year prevalence of all other cancers combined.”
According to www.medicalnewstoday.com, Dr. Howard W. Rogers, the lead author of this research paper, found that the cases of non-melanoma skin cancer in the US witness an increase of 4.2 percent every year and further termed the whole situation of skin cancer as “underrecognized”. For reference, the study used data from US government agencies and the US Census Bureau.
Celebrities who have suffered with skin cancer or melanoma include reggae legend Bob Marley, Melanie Griffith and singer Elizabeth Taylor.
