Alexa Ray Joel, daughter of Billy Ray Joel and former model Christie Brinkley, was reportedly rushed to hospital in New York on December 5. While initial reports stated the 23-year-old was in hospital for an undisclosed reason, it has since been revealed Alexa may have attempted to commit suicide.

The New York Post reported that Alexa, depressed over recently breaking up with her boyfriend Jimmy Riot, allegedly took eight Traumeel pills. Traumeel, an herbal medication similar to ibu profen, is reportedly incapable of killing someone. After feeling the effects, however, Alexa reportedly called 911 herself. Paramedics came and took her to a local Manhattan hospital.

The Huffington Post also reported the police was treating the incident as a suicide attempt.

Alexa was released from hospital that same night, and has since been confirmed as doing well, and is keen on getting her life back on track. Her parents issued the following statement:

“Every parent can imagine the pain and anguish we face as parents of a daughter who is working to recover from the dangerous actions she took while suffering a devastating heartbreak.”

People.com quoted friends of the singer as saying: “Alexa is the sweetest girl. She is one of the dearest souls on Earth. She’s an artist like all artists, she’s very passionate. Growing up is hard enough to do, but doing it in a fishbowl is unbelievably difficult.”

Another friend, Gail Worley, reportedly said: “I have no doubt she will recover fully from this and be horrified that it became such a spectacle.”

Alexa is a singer and songwriter, and has for years been trying to step out of her parents’ shadow. While she has celebrated marginal success, including a nation-wide Hard Rock Café tour in 2006, her big breakthrough still hasn’t occurred.
