J.K. Rowling, the celebrated author of the ‘Harry Potter’ series made her struggle with depression public and came out as a strong and transformed person.

Suicide.org quoted the author as saying: “I have never been remotely ashamed of having been depressed. Never. What’s to be ashamed of? I went through a really tough time and I am quite proud that I got out of that.

Depression struck immediately after her divorce with her first husband Jorge Arantes and in an interview, Rowling admitted that she even attempted suicide while struggling with this mental condition as a single mother, however it was her daughter that saw her seek help.

“The thing that made me go for help was probably my daughter,” she said. “She was something that earthed me, grounded me, and I thought, ‘This isn’t right; this can’t be right. She cannot grow up with me in this state’.”

“I’d gone into that very depressive mind set where everything has gone wrong so this one good thing in my life will now go wrong as well.”

When Rowling went to her GP, she found a replacement doctor there who immediately dismissed. Rowling said when her GP returned to work and read over the notes, she called her back in. Rowling claims this saved her.

As a single mother, she shouldered every responsibility beautifully and fought her depression bravely. Today, J.K. Rowling is among the richest women across the globe and she is living a happy and luxurious life with her daughter.

“I didn’t suffer depression for very long, but I vividly recollect what it felt like. I had no hope and I didn’t believe I would ever feel lighthearted again”, she said.
