‘Sex and the City 2′ makes menopause sexy

Published: June 19, 2020

Many women will agree that menopause is no laughing matter - hot flashes, slowing metabolism, accelerated ageing and then the realisation that the ticking clock does eventually stop?! Certainly no laughing matter - especially for the modern woman. The determination to defy mother nature is now so ingrained that the prospect of not having a choice over the matter is utterly terrifying.

Still, frightening or not, every woman must submit herself to menopause sooner or later. Even the likes of Sex and the City’s Samantha Jones. In this summer’s most anticipated sequel - Sex and the City 2 - the glamorous New York publicist tackles her biggest challenge yet. And she’s not giving in without a fight. In the movie, Jones states: “I am leading the way through the menopause maze with my vitamins, my melatonin sleep patches, my biodentical estrogen cream, progesterone cream, a touch of testosterone.”

She goes on to say: “I’ve tricked my body into thinking it’s younger.”

Talking on the ‘Early Show’, actress Kim Cattrall, who plays the New York glamour puss, said: “It was very difficult to make menopause funny and sexy. But hopefully we’ve achieved that,” CBS News reported.

The show’s co-host Maggie Rodriguez remarked that we only tend to hear negative stories about menopause. Cattrall answers: “Or it doesn’t have a name. They say the woman is going through ‘the change,’ she’s having mood swings, oh, scary. But here I think we’ve really handled it, like we did the cancer episode for Samantha, as well, in a completely different way. I think with intelligence and humor. And I think people will go for the ride.”

Steve Dorfman, from Palm Beach Post, asks whether hormone therapy is a viable option for bypassing the worst menopause symptoms. “During the past decade, the medical community has debated the risk/reward aspects of hormone therapy to combat menopausal symptoms,” he writes. ”Large clinical studies have shown that women taking a combination of pharmaceutical estrogen and progesterone are more at risk for heart disease, breast cancer, blood clots, strokes and abnormal mammograms.”

The Mayo Clinic, however, begs to differ, and states that the absolute risk to an individual woman taking hormone therapy is “quite low”. As a rule, hormone therapy is administered with care and with special attention to the severity of the woman’s symptoms. Doctors usually try to prescribed the lowest possible effective dose for the shortest period of time.

“These medications come in the form of pills, creams, patches and gels,” Dorfman adds.

For many women, such as age-fearing Samantha Jones, the risks seem worth taking and keeping young is top on the agenda. After all, where would the highly-sexed publicist be without her prolific love life?

Other celebrity women who have suffered due to the menopause include Whoopi Goldberg, Susan Sarandon, Stevie Nicks, Rosie O-Donnell and Jane Seymour.

    Hardly.

She makes menopause seem like something akin to death. Something that must be avoided at all costs. Her message is post-menopause, life is over because menopausal women are no longer sexually viable which is neither funny, sexy nor accurate.

And you send that message too with your ” the risks seem worth taking and keeping young is top on the agenda. ” (Which totally contradicts the message sent on the Susan Sarandon article a week ago)

The drugs prescribed for menopause are drugs to deal with severe symptoms. Not all women need them, in fact very few actually do. This is not about staying “young”, it is about easing menopausal transition. It is HRT not Botox.
