The Blood Type Diet

The blood type diet was designed by naturopathic physician Dr. Peter D’Adamo and gained publicity following the release of his book called Eat Right 4 Your Type. In the book, D’Adamo says that those seeking weight loss, general good health and even allergy resistance need look no further than their blood type for guidance. After years of research, the doctor and his team have seemingly come up with comprehensive diet and lifestyle plans for each of the four blood groups – A, O, B and AB – which they claim have been scientifically proven to achieve all the aforementioned goals.

According to D’Adamo, each blood group has its own distinct history and therefore needs its own personalised sustenance plan. Below is an outline of what each group needs and sample meal plans, as provided by

O Type

This is the most common blood group and is believed by D’Adamo to be the oldest one in human history. He therefore brands it the “hunter“. The hunter’s diet should mainly consist of protein (such as meat and fish) with some carbohydrates (such as bread, potatoes and rice) and dairy. He or she should also do a lot of exercise like running in order to keep in top shape.

2 slices toasted Ezekiel bread with butter
6 ounces vegetable juice
Herbal tea

Organic Roast Beef, 6 ounces
Spinach Salad
Apple or pineapple slices

1 slice of cake
Herbal tea

Lamb and asparagus stew, steamed broccoli, sweet potato.
Mixed fresh fruit
Herbal tea (beer or wine allowed)

A Type

Also called the “cultivator“, this blood group is thought by D’Adamo to date back to the dawn of agriculture 20,000 years ago. It is recommended that type As eat a diet free of red meat and concentrate more on vegetables, fish and a moderate amount of dairy. Cultivators should only do light forms of exercise.

Water with lemon
Oatmeal with soy milk and maple syrup
Grapefruit juice
Coffee or herbal tea

Greek salad
1 slice sprouted wheat bread
Herbal tea

2 rice cakes with peanut butter
2 plums
Green tea or water

Tofu Pesto Lasagna, Broccoli,
Frozen yogurt
Coffee or herbal tea (red wine if desired)

B Type

Another newer blood group, the “nomad“, is thought to have a flexible digestive system and is claimed to be the only type to thrive off dairy products. Although he or she should avoid chicken and bacon, eating plenty of meat, dairy, fruit and vegetables is advisable.

Fluidizer cocktail
Rice bran cereal with banana and skim milk
Grape juice

Sandwich – thin slice of cheese, thin slice of turkey breast, two slices of bread, mustard or mayonnaise
Green salad
Herbal tea

Fruit juice sweetened yogurt
Herbal tea

Broiled Fish with steamed vegetables
Fresh fruit
Herbal tea or coffee

AB Type

Apparently the newest of the blood groups and referred to by D’Adamo as “the enigma“, it is treated as an intermediate between types A and B.


Water with lemon, 8 ounces diluted grapefruit juice, 2 slices Ezekiel bread, Yogurt-Herb Cheese, Coffee

4 ounces sliced turkey breast, 2 slices rye bread
Caesar salad
2 plums
Herbal tea

Tofu Cheesecake
Iced herbal tea

Tofu Omelet
Stir-fried vegetables
Mixed-fruit salad
Decaffeinated coffee (red wine if desired)

But does it work?

It is generally agreed that there is no scientific proof for D’Adamo’s theories and his book has been criticised for not providing sufficient evidence to support his claims. It is arguably impossible to typecast such large groups of people without taking in individual needs, such as metabolism and sugar and insulin sensitivity. However, D’Adamo does not advocate an unhealthy diet, so those following it could benefit from it regardless of their blood type. The author denounces processed foods in favour of organic ones and the book’s low-calorie plans are likely to bring about weight loss.

    Thanks for this great post on Green Tea Ultra Diet, I was searching for something along the lines of this and in the top 20 results at google, yours was the most informed and well presented. I was wondering, do you think Green Tea Fat Burner would make a great topic for a future post here? Or did you do that already?
