The most significant figure in the world of rock music, Jimi Hendrix was found dead on September 18, 1970. He died aged 27 after choking on his own vomit.

The autopsy performed over him revealed that he took an enormous amount of barbiturate pills along with red wine. The question which arose was whether it was a suicide attempt or an accidental death? According to some media reports, Eric Burdon, his close friend, claimed that Jimi Hendrix committed suicide. However, the pathologists simply expelled the possibility of a suicide attempt. His death certificate also stated the cause of his death as inhalation of his own vomit after barbiturate intoxication. Foul play, however, was never ruled out in his passing away.

Hendrix’s manager Michael Jeffrey was initially alleged to have killed him after filling his throat with an overdose of barbiturate pills and red wine. As per his autopsy reports, the wine went down to not only his stomach but also his lungs. The medical practitioner who performed the autopsy was stunned to see the massive quantity of wine in his body and, as The Daily Mail reports, said: “The amount of wine that was over him was just extraordinary. Not only was it saturated right through his hair and shirt but his lungs and stomach were absolutely full of wine. I have never seen so much wine. We had a sucker that you put down into his trachea, the entrance to his lungs and to the whole of the back of his throat. We kept sucking him out and it kept surging and surging. He had already vomited up masses of red wine and I would have thought there was half a bottle of wine in his hair. He had really drowned in a massive amount of red wine.”

The statement fortified the suspicion that Hendrix’s death was not accidental but was a conspiracy. The physician, according to the Examiner, added: “It is curious that despite the copious (large) amounts of red wine that Jimi had in his body, his blood alcohol level was low. It is also curious that Jimi was covered in so much red wine.”

Jimi Hendrix has been immortalized countless times the world over, including in Kielce, Poland

Even his alleged girlfriend Monika was accused of killing him by not calling the ambulance on time, but was later freed from all charges when the case was re-opened in 1995. Even after 40 years of his untimely death, the question regarding the cause of his demise remains unanswered.

Jimi Hendrix was an American singer, guitarist and songwriter. He was considered as the greatest electric guitar player of all time who altered completely the way guitar was played. He used many forms like distortion, feedback and sheer volume and pioneered a far-reaching new sound that is widely known today.
