Anal Cancer

Published: August 05, 2020

Anal cancer starts in the rectum, the very end of a person’s digestive system. The anus is the channel connecting the large intestine to the sphincter, through which a person can expel bowels.

If found in its early stages, this type cancer is highly treatable.

What are the risk factors of anal cancer?

  • People who have been infected with the human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Many sex partners
  • Anal intercourse
  • Being aged 50 and above
  • Smoking

The treatment of anal cancer depends on the size of the tumor, where exactly the tumor is located, and whether the patient has human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

The regular treatment for anal cancer includes surgery, chemotheraphy and/or radiation.

While benign tumors in a person’s anal region aren’t necessarily uncommon, they should still be monitored by a health professional.

What are the symptoms?

  • Anal bleeding
  • Itching in the anus
  • Discharge from the anus
  • A lump or sense of pressure in the anus
  • A change in bowel habits
