Eddie Fisher dies aged 82

Published: September 24, 2020

Eddie Fisher was an icon of his day. The 1950s US singer sold millions of records worldwide and hosted his own TV show. He is also well-known for his high-profile marriages to (and divorces from) actresses Debbie Reynolds, Connie Stevens and Elizabeth Taylor.

The star died at a Berkeley hospital on Wednesday from complications following hip surgery, his daughter Tricia told the Associated Press. Fisher was married five times in total and has four children, including Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher from his marriage to “America’s Sweetheart“ Reynolds.

His divorce from Reynolds and subsequent marriage to his best friend’s recent widow, Elizabeth Taylor, caused scandalous publicity. The pair were together for just five years, before Taylor tied the knot with Richard Burton and Fisher suffered a breakdown. He was later to admit to struggles with drug addiction, the LA Times reports.

“Late last evening the world lost a true America icon,” said a statement issued by Fisher’s family. “One of the greatest voices of the century passed away. He was an extraordinary talent.”

Edwin Jack Fisher was born in Philadelphia in August 1928. His pre-Rock and Roll vocals made him a teen idol and one of the best-selling music artists of the 50s. He had seventeen Top 10 hits and thirty-five in the Top 40. His most memorable songs include Any Time, Thinking of You, I Need You and Wish You Were Here.

Other celebrities who have recently died include Rue McClanahan, Nancy Dolman and Michael Jackson.
