CT scan may help identify smokers more at risk of emphysema

Published: April 07, 2020

Scientists have found that CT scans may help in identifying the smokers who are more likely to fall prey to emphysema. According to www.breakthroughdigest.com, CT scans might prove out to be of great help to detect symptoms of emphysema just in the nick of time by measuring the flow of the blood inside lungs of the people who engage in smoking habits. The study has been conducted by the researchers at the University of Iowa.

As per www.xinhuanet.com, the study was conducted on about 41 people out of whom 17 were non-smokers while 24 were smokers. Although all the participants recorded for normal functioning lungs, 12 smokers showed very slight symptoms of emphysema.

Using multi-detector row CT imaging, the team of researchers studied the flow of the blood inside the lungs of these people which revealed that these 12 smokers recorded for the most unbalanced patterns of blood flow as compared to other people. Eric Hoffman, the lead researcher said “Our discovery may also help researchers understand the underlying causes of this disease and help distinguish this type of emphysema from other forms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This type of CT scan could even be a tool to test the effectiveness of new therapies by looking at the changes in lung blood flow.”

Celebrities who smoke include Lindsay LohanJack Nicholson, Shenae Grimes and Barrack Obama.
