The Amy Winehouse Foundation comes too late to save her

It seems like a case of ‘too little too late’ for Mitch Winehouse with his proposal to open a clinic which will offer rehabilitation to addicts. His idea comes in the wake of his daughter, Amy Winehouse’s death and he feels it is something that will allow him to honour her memory and create a positive resolution to a life which was blighted by substance abuse.

Far too many people fail to realise that addiction is a disease which is capable of ending a life. It comes in many forms and is often undetected even by close friends and family until it has a severe grip on the sufferer.

Amy Winehouse had been battling drug and alcohol addiction to the bitter end.

Addictions kill people on a daily basis, even some which may seem harmless like video game addiction (excessive gaming). A Chinese girl starved to death after playing World of Warcraft excessively and countless individuals have died from drug and alcohol overuse.

Of his idea for the Amy Winehouse Foundation, father Mitch said, ”I wanted an Amy Winehouse Foundation, something to help the things she loved - children, horses, but also to help those struggling with substance abuse.

“In this country, if you cannot afford a private rehabilitation clinic, there is a two-year waiting list for help. With the help of Keith Vaz MP, we are trying to change that.”

Keith Vaz was convinced by Mitch’s impassioned drive and the ‘powerful evidence’ he provided to the Home Affairs select committee as part of its inquiry into drug abuse back in 2009.

The Amy Winehouse Foundation has been proposed by her father Mitch.

Vaz has since offered his support to the Winehouse family saying, “I am happy to help Mitch in anyway I can with his important campaign to help rehabilitate those most vulnerable in our society.”

“Two years on, we need to revisit this issue to see if anything has improved.”

Amy had spent some time in rehab earlier this year working hard to combat drug addictions and was said to have been doing well with it. She was however still struggling with alcohol dependency as was well documented at her Serbian gig where she jumbled words to her songs and staggered about the stage, angering fans in the process. Her 12 date tour was cancelled on the back of that show until she was well enough to perform again.

She was found dead at her Camden Town home on Saturday afternoon where fans have left tributes. The cause of her death will not be given until the results of a toxicology report are returned within the next four weeks.

While Mitch Winehouse’s efforts to set up a foundation in his daughter’s honour are noble, one has to wonder why he couldn’t have done something similar while she was still alive. Clearly she needed help with many issues but it seems from the outside that she received little support. Somewhere like the well established Betty Ford Center may have been a good option, removing her from a circle of hangers on who have perpetuated her addictions.
